Reporting and recording weather
AN ARDUINO BASED DIY WEATHER STATION
IN BRIDGE GARDENS, BA20DF FARMBOROUGH, COUNTY SOMERSET – NEAR BATH
UNITED KINGDOM
Weather Underground PWS IBATH28
TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY
SHT10 industrial temperature and humidity sensor:
WIND SPEED & DIRECTION
Three cup anemometer:
- Start wind speed: 0.4 to 0.8 m/s
- Resolution: 0.1 m/s
- Effetive wind speed measurement range: 0 to 30 m/s
- System error: +/- 3 %
- Working temperature: -40 to +80 °C
Tail type wind direction sensor:
- Start wind speed: 0.5 m/s
- Resolution: 1 degree
- System error: +/- 3 %
- Working temperature: -20 to +80 °C
RAINFALL
Davis rain collector, tipping bucket type with magnetic reed switch:
- Collection area: 214 cm²
- Accuracy: for rain rates up to 50 mm/hr +/- 4 % of total or 0.2 mm, whichever is greater.
- For rain rates from 50 mm/hr to 100 mm/hr +/- 5 % of total 0.2 mm, whichever is greater
AIR PRESSURE
MS5803-14BA Pressure Sensor with I²C interface and onboard temperature sensor for high resolution and accurate air pressure measurements:
- Operating range: 0 – 14 bar
- Resolution: 0.4 mbar
Software
Arduino Uno running software written with the Arduino interface. The station uploads all collected data every 10 seconds to the internet (weather underground).
Station Log:
- 18.02.2022 unfortunately the temperature and humidity sensor is offline again since a few weeks due to a fault in the cable. This has not been fixed yet due to wet weather conditions limiting access to the roof.
- 2024.06.2021 temperature and humidity sensor back online – station is fully operational
- 16.12.2020 station back online / the issue with the temperature and humidity sensor has not been fixed yet due to wet weather (can’t access safely the roof space where the station is mounted), but the two sensors are excluded from the station data until they can be fixed
- 18.11.2020 station is offline due to a technical issue with the temperature and humidity sensor
- 15.05.2019 station back online
- 19.04.2019-13.05.2019 station offline due to a faulty wire connection in the temperature and humidity sensor
- 23.08.2018 updated software – daily rain was reset after 5 hours (now correctly resets after 24 hours)
- 13.08.2018 corrected software – rain data was sent to WU in the wrong unit (added conversion to inches as WU expects Imperial units)
- 12.08.2018 fixed due-point temperature not being calculated correctly in the software
- 10.08.2018 Farmborough Weather Station (Station ID: BATH28) went online on WeatherUnderground
To-Do:
- install illumination sensor
- build heater for rain gauge to accurately measure snowfall
